What is platelet rich plasma therapy?

It is a process of using the healing power of your body’s own blood platelets to halt hair loss and enable new hair growth. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a substance derived from your own blood that aids in hair restoration by promoting the growth of hair and skin cells at injection sites. It increases blood supply to the follicle, increases shaft size (thickness) of the hair follicle and triggers the growth phase.

PRP is easily extracted from your blood and processed on-site to concentrate several growth factors and cytokines. The PRP is then administered via a series of injections over the full scalp or in a localized treatment area.

The recovery from either procedure is typically uneventful. Some mild swelling of the forehead is occasionally experienced. This is normal and will typically resolve in 48 hours. Avoiding vigorous activity is recommended until the swelling is gone. There is no other downtime or noticeable effects of the procedure. Patients can wash after 6 hours but should avoid shampoos with sulfites and parabens.

Treatments are monthly for 3 months then maintenance at every 4-6 months. New hair growth can be seen as early as two months, but is typically evident between four to eight months and will continue to improve up to one year after treatment.
